Barriers to Participation Webinar for Dance Practitioners in Hertfordshire

On Friday 10 July Occupational Therapist, Michelle Gersh introduced the combined person, environment and occupation model at BEEE Creatives third webinar for dance practitioners in Hertfordshire and explained barriers to participation in dance. A dance case study was also presented by Rashmi Becker, Founding Director of Step Change Studios, a company committed to making dance accessible for everyone.

The project, funded by Arts Council England and in partnership between BEEE Creative and the districts of DacorumWatford and Three Rivers saw this webinar include:

1. Barriers to participation – a look at the complexities to barriers and the different factors at play that are unique to each individual – creating dance to fit the person.

2. Michelle – The elements that can affect a person’s performance and their participation. This can be split into three strands, the person, the environment and the occupation (the activity they want or need to do).  It is the moderation of these three components that will optimise a participation.  “The language of dance transcends disability”

3. Rashmi – Be ambitious and take risks in your practice. Find new ways of working to develop your practice but also the experience of the participants – there is support of practitioners out there – so if you have questions, talk to your participants and other professionals – together finding a way forward.

4. Discussion about how, in the current climate of more work being done online, these principles still apply and factors to consider.
